Abstract
This article analyses the implications of Brexit for European citizenship, focusing on its
legal, political, identity-related, and sociocultural effects on British citizens and on European
Union citizens residing in the United Kingdom. Drawing on a qualitative and interpretive
approach, based on documentary analysis of legal, institutional, and bibliographic sources,
it seeks to understand how Brexit and the subsequent transition period reconfigured rights,
statuses, and forms of belonging associated with the European space. The analysis shows that
the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the European Union was not merely an institutional
change, but also exposed the structural fragility of European citizenship by revealing its
dependence on the nationality of a Member State. It also demonstrates that Brexit affected
European identity, the sense of belonging, and social and cultural relations, contributing
to new forms of uncertainty, vulnerability, and differentiation among citizens. In this way,
the article contributes to an understanding of the contingent nature of European citizenship
and of the limits of supranational citizenship in contexts of political disintegration.
